Description:
This unit is the first in a two part sequence of units which aims to give students a thorough knowledge of the fundamental laws and principles of classical physics and an introduction to modern physics. This first unit covers motion in one and two dimensions, force, Newton's Laws, work, energy, momentum, rigid body dynamics, rotation and angular momentum, solids and fluids, oscillations, waves in elastic media, sound, temperature and heat, thermal properties of matter, kinetic theory. There is an emphasis on problem solving and experimental investigations.

Assessment is by tests, assignments, laboratory, final examination.
Prerequisite(s): A thorough knowledge of Year 12 high school Physics is assumed. TEE students without this background should enrol in M120 Introduction to Physics before undertaking this unit. The mathematical background required is a satisfactory standard in TEE Calculus, or equivalent. Students without this level of mathematical preparation should undertake M182 Applied Mathematics either prior to or concurrently with their enrolment in M150 Physics for Science and Engineering I.

Administrative information:
This is a 1 semester unit (15 weeks). Between 13-19 hours of study per week is required. It is a 3 point unit.
